United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Clayton Paul High Pipe, age 23, of Mission, South Dakota, appeared before United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange on March 13, 2012, and pled guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both.
The charge stems from an incident that took place on July 13, 2010, when High Pipe and two other people randomly attacked a third man at the Sunrise Apartment Complex in Mission, South Dakota. The victim was kicked in the face, had his head stomped upon, and suffered jaw fractures and serious bodily injury as a result of the attack.
The investigation was conducted by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Meghan N. Dilges.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for June 4, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.
